Nandan Nilekani Suggests Ways To Ensure Effective PDS

(RTTNews) - Nandan Nilekani, the man behind the Aadhar project, has suggested ways to ensure an effective public distribution system (PDS) in the country to National Advisory Council Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, report media.

In a letter to Ms. Gandhi, he reportedly said that all fair price shops could be electronically-linked to various government agencies involved in PDS. Reformation of the PDS has become essential given the government's intent to announce the Food Security Bill soon.

He claims that it will help ensure transparency and accountability on the part of all agencies involved and maintain quality of the products supplied.

He says the ID number used in ration cards would eliminate bogus card holders through deployment of sale system equipped with fingerprint reader to identify a beneficiary before issuing rations.

Nilekani's proposal is now expected to be discussed at the next meeting of the NAC.

Ila Patnaik, a senior fellow of the National Institute of Public Finance & Policy, said identifying the needy people had been a big problem and the UID number was likely to address it.
