218 - L-1 Identity Solutions wins $24.5 mln purchase orders for India's UID program - International Business Times - US

L-1 Identity Solutions, an identity solution and service provider, said it has received $24.5 million purchase orders for finger and iris biometric capture devices for the initial phase of India's Unique Identification Number (UID) program or Aadhar.

The orders include both Agile TP fingerprint slap devices and Mobile-Eyes iris cameras.

Unique identification project was initially conceived by the Planning Commission of India as an initiative that would provide identification for each resident across the country and would be used primarily as the basis for efficient delivery of welfare services. It would also act as a tool for effective monitoring of various programs and schemes of the Government. For UID program the biometric devices, which include face camera, fingerprint scanner and iris scanner, are used.

The brand name of the UID is Aadhaar and Nandan Nilekani is the Chairman of UID Authority of India.

The orders were received from multiple sources participating in the UID program and L-1 expects to continue to receive additional orders for more units throughout the program's five-year enrollment cycle.

Through a contract manufacturing partner, L-1 has established a manufacturing facility in India that will begin producing devices for this program in the year end 2010.

"We are encouraged by the strong demand we have seen in the first phase of this program for our state-of-the-art fingerprint and iris products," said Robert V. LaPenta, Chairman, President and CEO of L-1 Identity Solutions.

The products of which have been certified by the Standardization, Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate for the Government of India's Department of Information Technology (DIT).

L-1 Identity Solutions has more than 2,200 employees worldwide and is headquartered in Stamford.
